Lesson 3:PC Care and Safety Procedures for Users

1.How to take care of your PC
a.Computers need a good working working temperature to work properly. They need to be placed in a cool dry place. You can maintain good temperature with an electric fan or air conditioning.
b.All the cables and connectors must be tied together to keep them away from walkways to avoid accidents.
c.Avoid eating in front of a computer.Food bits attract insects like ants that can penetrate the hardware and cause malfunction.Spilled drinks,on the other hand, causes short circuits.
d.Always use an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) to regulate electricity.Too much electric voltage cause the unit to short. Also, turn off computers during lightning as these can cause electric surges to the computer.
e.Do not bump or drop the computer peripherals or components as any damage may cause them to malfunction.
f.Avoid clutter around your PC.Use soft cloth in cleaning your computer to avoid scratches.
g.Always scan for computer viruses.Internet connection and external storage devices often carry viruses that could harm your files and cause software malfunctions.
2.Good working habits
a.Tap on keys and mouse buttons gently.
b.Avoid long, uninterrupted periods of typing. You may take short breaks every 20 minutes.
c.Avoid staring at the monitor too long.Take vision breaks (stare at something green, etc.) and do eye exercises.
3.Proper workstation design
   a.Position in a well-ventilated,comfortable room.
b.Use an adjustable workstation and an ergonomic computer chair.
c.Place the monitor 16 to 24 inches away,at eye level or slightly at a lower angle.Tilt the monitor or adjust the light source.Adjust the brightness and contrast settings.
d.Use extendable/retractable legs of the keyboard.
e.Place mouse where it is easily accessible by your dominant hand.
f.Use a document holder to minimize vertical head movements.
4.Proper posture
a.Sit up straight and put the feet flat on the floor.Use a footrest if needed.
b.Position your lower arms parallel withe floor and level to your keyboard, with elbows at your side.
   c.Keeps wrists straight.

Types of Computers

PC: Abbreviation for "Personal Computer," 93% of the computer population uses PCs. PCs for personal use come in almost any shape and design, they usually run Microsoft Windows (for example, Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7), are exceptionally fast, and are compatible with almost all available computer applications. Most large-scale businesses, corporations, schools, and home users operate PCs due to their customizable features, performance, and generally low price. Leading PC manufacturers include Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and many others.
===
It should be mentioned that when people refer to a PC in general conversation, they are (almost always) referring to a Microsoft Windows compatible personal computer. These computers are not limited to running the Windows family of operating systems, but their architecture is compatible with the requirements of claiming compatibility. Historically, these would have been explained as "IBM PC" or "IBM Clone" computers.
PC's in general can function as servers or workstations, depending on their implementation. These may be graded, or configured as:

Personal use - Most commonly thought of as a "PC"
Business Class Workstation - the "PC" qualification starts getting a little grey here.
Business Class Server - no longer considered a "PC"
Laptop: A compact, battery powered version of a PC. Also called a "Notebook."
Macs: Even though the Mac (short for "Macintosh") is a form of personal computer, it is different from a PC because it does not use Microsoft Windows as the Operating System. Instead, it uses the Mac OS series, such as OS X Leopard.
Macs are known for their incredible system stability, quality designs, unique programs and features, and their usually fast speed. Macs are becoming more popular in society, generally used in peoples' homes or in digital graphic design studios. Unfortunately, many people do not invest their money in a Mac because of a Mac's steep price (a $1500 Dell PC is about the same price of a $2400 Apple Macktintosh--both with the same specifications) and the lack of many compatible programs made specifically for Macs (although the number is increasing).
Mainframe : Computers with large Hard Drives, lots of Memory (RAM), multiple CPUs running together, which perform large amounts of computing depending upon the speed of the processors used and amount of RAM included.
Micro Computer : A very small computer, usually used in cameras.
Super Computer : A computer with lots of processors, Memory (RAM), etc. Usually used in scientific research work or they are used by the government. For large manufacturers, a supercomputer typically "breaks down" problems, solves them in small "bits," and then puts the problem "back together." They have a capability of 14,000 micro computers.
PDA: "Personal Digital Assistant" or Palmtop.
Analog : Older, out-dated computers. They calculate physical Quantities such as voltage, etc...
Digital: Computers which use binary digits (zeros and ones) for processing. Almost all electronic computing devices are digital, including PCs, Macs, and Servers.
Server: A computer with great processing power that receives and performs requests from other computers.

What the above answers are stating are names/applications/types of electronic computers. Electronic computers can be subdivided into analog or digital. At a basic level, all digital electronic computers are composed of several parts - including input/output (LCDs, LEDs, keypads, printers, etc.), a processor (often includes an arithmetic logic unit, controller, registers, etc., but doesn't necessarily need to contain all of these), and memory. Analog computers were the predecessors of these digital computers, and are still used in some applications today.

A "computer" is simply something used for performing calculations. A "long" time ago (World War 2), Computer was a title/job description, literally meaning someone who did computations. This definition would also stretch computer to cover mechanical devices, such as the enigma machines used in WW2 for ciphers (by the Germans).

Answer to assignment no. 2

Liquid Paper-Bette Nesmith Graham
It was originally called "mistake out", the invention of Bette Nesmith Graham, a Dallas secretary and a single mother raising a son on her own. Graham used her own kitchen blender to mix up her first batch of liquid paper or white out, a substance used to cover up mistakes made on paper.Bette Nesmith Graham put some tempera waterbased paint, colored to match the stationery she used, in a bottle and took her watercolor brush to the office. She used this to correct her typing mistakes… her boss never noticed. Soon another secretary saw the new invention and asked for some of the correcting fluid. Graham found a green bottle at home, wrote "Mistake Out" on a label, and gave it to her friend. Soon all the secretaries in the building were asking for some, too.
In 1956, Bette Nesmith Graham started the Mistake Out Company (later renamed Liquid Paper) from her North Dallas home. She turned her kitchen into a laboratory, mixing up an improved product with her electric mixer. Graham’s son, Michael Nesmith (later of The Monkees fame), and his friends filled bottles for her customers. Nevertheless, she made little money despite working nights and weekends to fill orders. One day an opportunity came in disguise. Graham made a mistake at work that she couldn’t correct, and her boss fired her. She now had time to devote to selling Liquid Paper, and business boomed.
By 1967, it had grown into a million dollar business. In 1968, she moved into her own plant and corporate headquarters, automated operations, and had 19 employees. That year Bette Nesmith Graham sold one million bottles. In 1975, Liquid Paper moved into a 35,000-sq. ft., international headquarters building in Dallas. The plant had equipment that could produce 500 bottles a minute. In 1976, the Liquid Paper Corporation turned out 25 million bottles. Its net earnings were $1.5 million. The company spent $1 million a year on advertising, alone. Bette Nesmith Graham believed money to be a tool, not a solution to a problem. She set up two foundations to help women find new ways to earn a living. Graham died in 1980, six months after selling her corporation for $47.5 million.
